Entering "Second Attempt" Scores

return to top

When students make a second attempt at an assignment and earn a higher score, there are three options for how to enter that new score into the gradebook.

Option 1:

If an individual student earns a higher score on assignment, you may simply enter the new score in place of the old one and add a comment designating it as a second attempt.

To enter the new score, double click into the score box.
Erase the original score, enter the new score followed by
a space and the comment "Second Attempt"

Option 2:

For a few students, you can create a new second assignment, categorize in a graded category and select only the students for whom the new score applies.

1. Create a new assignment.  Complete the basic assignment information and select a graded category for the second attempt assignment.

2. Select "More Options."

3.  Select Choose Students.
4.  Choose the students that have completed a second attempt and follow to prompts to continue completing the assignment.
5.  Enter the second attempt scores from the gradebook page.  Remove the lower of the two scores for those students.

Option 3:

For the initial attempt, create the assignment in the category non-graded.  Then, for all students you can change a category from non-graded to graded and enter second attempt scores where appropriate.

1.  To change the category of the assignment, double click on the title of the assignment in the gradebook.   This will open the page to edit the assignment.
2.   Change the category of the assignment and then select "Save Assignment."
3.  Enter the second attempt scores for students in the gradebook.
